SmartShot is Accurate and Easy to Use – David Tubb’s Dynamic Targeting Reticle and ProjectileScience’s SmartShot ballistic app comprise what we believe is the fastest and  most accurate long range system available to the public. It has been proved through supersonic transition and into the subsonic regime during years of development since 2009. Hits were validated with video beyond 2200 yards on live, dynamic targets (baboons). See TN190325 on the Technical Notes Page. Ordinary dial and grid reticles are too slow for dynamic targets because of the need to compute a firing solution and, for most reticles, the need to dial the elevation.

In January, 2018, Nate Stallter won the ELR World Championship at Pahrump, Nevada using David Tubb’s new Adaptive Target Rifle with a DTReticle and the DTR Ballistic App which is based on the SmartShot Ballistic App. He made three hits with three shots on a 3 ft square target at 1768 yards, without sighters, setting a world record. Then four hours later he set a new world record at 2011 yards, again with no sighters. In December, 2018, David Tubb reset the ELR record at 2200 yards, also using his Adaptive Target Rifle system. See https://youtu.be/xTYETDqxkC8. In October 2018 in Africa, Robert Massey made a 2193 yard hit on a baboon using the Tubb Adaptive Rifle system. See the video at https://youtu.be/w1GYszhH2GY. Robert also set the South African ELR record in 2019.

It is significant that all baboon video clips shown in Tech Note TR190325, both ELR records and Robert Massey’s 2193 yard shot were all first shot hits, i.e. “called”, using either the DTR Ballistic App or it’s parent, the SmartShot Ballistic App.

We believe this level of accuracy is unique because none of the many ballistic systems we have analyzed match the trajectories we observe in the field at very long ranges. We believe this unique accuracy is the consequence of adapting Art Pejsa’s closed-form ballistic model for both the subsonic and supersonic regimes. The principal unique capabilities of Pejsa’s system appear to be: 1) his general equation describes all modern low drag projectiles we have tested and 2) the required calibration for each individual rifle system can be easily accomplished by adjusting only one value in the supersonic regime and one value in the subsonic regime. We know of no other system that is as accurate and can be so easily calibrated.

ProjectileScience, inc™ is an aero engineering company with more than 50 years of atmospheric projectile experience. SmartShot™ is a unique long range ballistic app developed by ProjectileScience™ in collaboration with David Tubb specifically for his Dynamic Targeting Reticle™. Additionally, SmartShot supports traditional dial-up and grid reticles. SmartShot™ development began in 2009 and was tested in a number of different environments in the US and South Africa using diverse bullets including the 115 grain DTAC in 6xc, 175gn 308 Winchester, 55 grain 223 Remington, 350 grain 338 Lapua and a 364 grain 375 Warner Flatline. All input and output variables are displayed on a one page Excel-like spreadsheet which runs on any device that uses a modern browser such as Edge, Firefox, Opera or Safari. SmartShot can operate off-line with no reference to any spreadsheet software.

QuickStart instructions can be downloaded from Manuals page. The User Manual describes in some detail Velocity Retention, barrel elevation and azimuth angles plus spin drift, Coriolis, crosswind jump, differential wind drift, powder temperature sensitivity, crosswind boundary layer, obstacle clearance distance and others.

Three web based htm beta versions of SmartShot are offered for evaluation free with a limited life. Download from the Ballistic Solutions page.

Several technical notes describing the advanced features of SmartShot™ are posted. More will be added. See the Tech Notes page.

Sixty short video clips of shots on baboons are posted on the Video page. Each clip is about one minute long including a slow motion replay.

Arthur J. Pejsa – Derived the closed-form math upon which SmartShot is based. He summarized his ballistic work in New Exact Small Arms Ballistics, Kenwood Publishing, Stevens Point, WI, 2008, LCCN 2007906889.
David Tubb – Invented, designed and implemented the Dynamic Targeting Reticle. No aiming system available for public use is as fast in the real-world of dynamic targets that appear at unknown ranges – and quickly disappear.
